Director MAPS Programs

Dr. Gregory Popcak named Director of Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies Program

Holy Apostles College & Seminary is proud to announce that Dr. Gregory Popcak has been named the Director for the Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies. Please see Dr. Popcak’s statement below:

Dear Holy Apostles College & Seminary community,

The MAPS program is dedicated to helping learners more effectively exercise their zeal for building God’s kingdom through marriage and family ministry, youth ministry, spiritual direction and pastoral counseling, parish administration, evangelization, and other pursuits that empower God’s people to live more abundant lives.

The program has been recently accredited by the State of Connecticut’s Office of Higher Education and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges to be offered through a fully-online format. An application is pending to the Association of Theological Schools, which we hope also to have approved by June, 2017. I’m genuinely excited about what that means for busy people who feel a call in their hearts to do more for the Church but who just don’t have the time to take classes at a traditional brick and mortar school.  The MAPS program will offer those gifted individuals the top-flight education they need to respond to God’s call more effectively and prepare them to minister more fruitfully.

I feel like God has been preparing me for this position my whole life.  My background is in pastoral counseling and I have degrees in social work, psychology, theology and human services.  In addition to having taught for several years in both the undergraduate and graduate levels, I’ve written or co-authored over 20 books and programs integrating the traditional wisdom of our Catholic faith with cutting-edge insights from counseling psychology.  My counseling practice, The Pastoral Solutions Institute, is a group practice that offers Catholic-integrated psychotherapy services by telephone to Catholic couples, families, and individuals around the world.  Finally, together with my wife, Lisa, I host More2Life Radio, a faith-based call-in advice program that airs weekdays at 10E/9C on the EWTN Global Catholic Radio Network/SiriusXM 130.  Pastoral ministry is really my life’s passion.

My initial goals are to get acclimated to the great work that’s already being done in the program and to make sure we’re preparing learners to do the dynamic ministry work they are asking us to help them do. Longer term, because there is such a tremendous need for faithful counseling services, I hope to develop a post-graduate certificate program in pastoral counseling for licensed counselors, social workers, and psychologists who would like to be able to use their gifts to serve the faithful more effectively.  I look forward to working with my colleagues to develop the program in several other exciting ways as well.

I’m confident that the MAPS program will help learners be even more effective instruments of God’s grace in their parishes and communities.  We need parish and community-based ministers that are on fire with God’s love and equipped with the tools to serve and I’m confident the MAPS program can help to meet this need.  I’m truly excited for the opportunity to be working with Holy Apostles!
